Speaker: Professor Stein Tønnesson is a research professor at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) who served as leader of the East Asian Peace program at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research, Uppsala University, 2011–2017. He serves as leader of a project on social media in armed conflict, with special focus on Myanmar. His most recent book is Explaining the East Asian Peace (NIAS Press, 2017).
Synopsis: Professor Stein Tønnesson will report about preliminary findings from the 3-year research project Social Media in Armed Conflict: The Case of Myanmar, which is carried out in cooperation with the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) and the Myanmar Institute for Peace and Security (MIPS). One of the findings is that social media have made it easier for armed groups to present their views and narratives to various audiences, both in moderate and more aggressive ways.
